Mastering My Life's Juggling Act In My 40s...

Life typically feels like a juggling act to me, especially because I am managing work, raising kids, pursuing school & personal passion project, and still try to find time for myself.

At 48, I’ve learned that balance isn’t about perfection..
—it’s about being intentional and prioritizing what truly matters. Here are my top tips for creating harmony in my daily life and still leaving room for fun.

Set Clear Priorities.

Work Life Balance can use a little Wellness Coaching!

Every day, I ask myself, “What truly needs my attention today?” Instead of trying to do everything, I focus on the most important tasks that align with my long-term goals and needs.

For work, I prioritize upcoming deadlines and set time blocks to focus on a specific task or project, while I minimize multitasking.

F

or my family, I make sure to carve out meaningful connection time. Dinner time and a couple of hours after dinner I reserve for family time. It feels like a time of day we all come together after a long work and school day for everyone and we connect.

Knowing my priorities allows me to let go of the less important things, guilt-free!

Create Simple Routines.

Having predictable routines keeps the chaos under control. I wake up early to get a head start on my day with a quick workout or 15 minutes of journaling, which helps me center myself. I also use Sunday evenings to plan meals, kids’ activities, and my school schedule. These small habits ensure I’m not scrambling and save me time and energy throughout the week.

Find Energy in Small Joys.

To maintain energy, I infuse my day with small moments of joy. Whether it’s dancing in the kitchen while cooking, taking a quick walk in the sun, or sneaking in a favorite podcast while driving, these little bursts of fun keep me recharged. I remind myself that self-care doesn’t have to take hours—it’s the small, meaningful moments that make the difference.

Delegate and Ask for Help.

It took me years to realize I don’t have to do it all myself. I involve my kids in household tasks, ask for help when needed, and let go of the pressure to be “Superwoman.” Delegating responsibilities has not only lightened my load but also taught my kids valuable life skills.

Celebrate the Wins.

At the end of each day, I reflect on what went well—even the smallest wins. I write down in my notebook 5 things I like about today. This practice helps me focus on the positive versus the negative and I feel accomplished and it keeps me motivated. Whether it’s having completed a task at work, helped a colleague or friend through a problem, took time out to self care during my day, received a compliment or simply that I got to enjoy dinner at the end of the day with my family, I purposefully take the time to intentionally acknowledge those moments.

Finding balance doesn’t mean doing everything and getting it done—it’s about doing the things that matter and accounting for the good in the day, not just focusing on what didn't get done or what didn't go well. With a little planning, intention, and self-compassion, I’ve found that it’s possible to handle life’s demands while still having energy and joy.
