Why "Fake It Till You Make It" Actually Works

The Science of Self-Talk: Why "Fake It Till You Make It" Actually Works

The way we talk to ourselves quite literally shapes our reality. But here's what fascinates me most – the phrase "fake it till you make it" isn't just a catchy saying; it's backed by neuroscience.

The Neural Network of Self-Talk

Are you aware that every thought we have creates a neural pathway in our brain. Let me say that again….

Every thought we have creates a neural pathway in our brain.

When we consistently tell ourselves "I can't," "I'm too tired," or "I'll never achieve that," we're actually building highways of limitation in our minds.

But here's the powerful flip side: when we consciously choose empowering thoughts, even if we don't fully believe them yet (yes, that's the "fake it" part), we begin creating new neural pathways of possibility.

From "Faking It" to "Becoming It" Think about it like this: When you're learning to play tennis, you mimic the proper form before it feels natural. Your body eventually adapts, and what once felt "fake" becomes authentic movement. The same applies to our mindset:

• When you say "I am capable" (even if imposter syndrome is screaming)

• When you stand in a power pose (even if you're nervous)

• When you approach tasks with confidence (even if you're uncertain)

You're not being inauthentic – you're actively rewiring your brain for success.

Breaking the All-or-Nothing Trap

I see so many driven women fall into the trap of thinking they need to feel 100% confident before taking action. But here's the truth I share with my clients…

…action often precedes confidence…

not the other way around.

Real-Life Application:

1. Start with small, deliberate changes in your self-talk

2. Notice when limiting beliefs arise (they will!)

3. Choose an empowering alternative thought

4. Act as if that new thought is already your truth

5. Watch as evidence begins to accumulate

The Energy Connection

Your thoughts directly impact your energy levels.

When you shift from "I'm too exhausted to handle this" …

…to "I have the energy I need for what matters most," you literally change your biochemistry.

A Personal Story: When I transitioned from healthcare leadership in nursing to wellness coaching, my inner critic was loud. "Who are you to guide others?" it asked. But I chose different thoughts: "My experience is valuable. I can make a difference." Those intentional thought choices manifested into the thriving practice I run today.

Your Thought Audit Challenge

This week, I invite you to:

1. Notice your most common self-talk patterns

2. Identify one limiting belief that's holding you back

3. Create its empowering opposite

4. "Fake it" – speak and act from that new belief

5. Document the shifts you observe

Remember: You're not being fake – you're being intentional about your growth.

👉 Your Turn: What's one limiting belief you're ready to transform?
